The movement began after a tourist guide and union member, Özkan Yaşarer, was fired from his job for speaking out against the exploitation of tourist guides. According to Cumhuriyet, a Turkish daily newspaper, Yaşarer's dismissal sparked outrage among tourist guides and workers in the tourism industry, leading to the creation of the hashtag #TurizmEmekçisiKole Değildir, which translates to 'Tourism worker is not a slave.' The movement has since grown, with thousands of people expressing their support for the rights of tourism workers.
